Hi again,
I'd like to thank everyone who showed up at the video call last
Wednesday. I am very pleased with how it turned out. Jitsi seemed to
work just fine, even though we had participants from all over Europe
and even South Africa, and everyone was clearly audible (albeit with a
slight delay for some).
It was great to meet all of you and to hear how others are using and
improving DebOps. Our next conference call will be next Wednesday at
the same time and in the same Jitsi room. An invite will follow.
*Attendees*
- Maciej (Poland)
- Robin/ypid (Germany)
- Tasos (Greece)
- Pinguin (Germany)
- Nicolas/nqb (France)
- Imre (Netherlands)
- Dam (Malta)
- javud (Germany)
- Hendrik/hvjunk (South Africa)
- Petr (Czech Republic)
*Aim of meeting*
A short meeting to allow everyone to introduce themselves as well as
sharing how you use DebOps and what you would like to improve.
*Agenda*
- Introduction: who are you, how did you get started with DebOps and
how do you use it now?
- What improvements are you working on right now? Do you need help with
something?
- What improvements would you like to see?
*Summary*
DebOps is used for both personal self-hosting and IT automation at
various organizations. However, there appears to be two speeds in
DebOps: the long-time sysadmins, and the crowd of people who are trying
to get there. The learning curve for newcomers is quite steep. Better
documentation could help with this. Some attendees for example didn't
know how to start writing roles for DebOps, how to test them with
Vagrant and which best practices and coding standards to follow. These
pain points are further described in this overview:
https://docs.debops.org/en/master/developer-guide/contributing-docs.html#...
There are also people who are having difficulties using DebOps. It is a
good idea to help these users on the debops-users mailing list as the
messages on there are archived, as opposed to messages in the IRC
channel. We should consider promoting debops-users as a way for
newcomers to get help.
The project could also use a better roadmap. Right now we have
https://wiki.debops.org/roadmap and
https://github.com/debops/debops/projects.
To conclude, here is what the attendees want to work on:
- A role for the NSD authoritative nameserver, with support for
performing Let's Encrypt DNS challenges (Dam)
- Scripts for fully encrypted Proxmox hypervisors at Hetzner (Dam)
- Proxmox virtual machine automation (Hendrik)
- Roles for ELK stack: Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana (Maciej)
- Roles for Elastic software, especially Filebeat (Robin)
- Role for self-hosted RSS reader software (Robin)
- Documentation for role development (Tasos)
- Integrating various roles used at place of work (Imre)
Hope to see you all next week. I'll be practicing my pronunciation of
Maciej's name until then ;)
