excellent job Nicolas. I'm following your thread.
I'm bogged down with bureaucracy in 3 different countries these days so
your collaboration is precious. Thank you.
From my point of view, having several providers/communities for
journalists, sources and human right defenders built on different
technologies (OpenStack, Proxmox and others) is a good point.
agreed, diversity is
fundamental although, speaking of tools for
investigative journalism, the focus has to be the journalist.
Journalists and newsrooms need to be presented with a clear set of
comprehensive and integrated solutions backed up by a clear, progressive
and steady training path covering all the aspects in their journey into
uncharted technologies and tools.
All this finalized to give them a reliable set of tools for their daily
drive and the knowledge to master them.
Currently I don't think we are even close to this final result. There is
too much chaos and too little orchestration of the parts involved in
this massive project for freedom.
What's your take on this?
So please don't ditch what you have done.
I won't if it's of any help and maybe something can be taken from what
I've done even if I ditch it.
When I judge my own work I see strong and weak points:
I suck at mail servers and voip systems. I'm not on top of nextcloud yet
(especially when it comes to Talk and the turn server).
The mailserver and nextcloud are damn crucial and this is a huge problem.
However I think I did a decent job with filesystem encryption, NSD,
Minio (S3) and letsencrypt certificates, VPN , android, qubes and
secrets management.
I've made prototypes (I'm at the 4th version after more than 2 years)
and given them in the hands of non-tech people with acceptable results.
This gave me a meaningful insight over the difficulties they
experienced. Gold.
What's missing is: funding, tech help and a strong community, all
equally important. It will take months before something gets together on
all these fronts but I'm confident it will happen.
